A year of Science at LfiSV

Each year, LfiSV selects a central theme that connects and inspires educational projects across all classes. This year, the spotlight was on science — a broad, exciting topic full of discoveries in every field.

Throughout the year, from preschool to primary, students explored a wide range of scientific concepts: biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, and geology. These explorations came to life through projects, field trips, experiments, constructions, observations… and plenty of curiosity.

The journey culminated in Science Week, held from June 10 to 13 in the primary school. For four days, mixed-age groups from CP to CM2 participated in twelve workshops led by teachers in French, German, and English — a truly multilingual and interdisciplinary experience.

Students experimented with light and shadow, learning how shadows are formed and why they vary in size or clarity. Others explored math through magic tricks using dice, cards, and logic puzzles — discovering how numbers can surprise and delight.

Natural sciences were also in the spotlight: in chemistry, red cabbage juice became a watercolor palette, revealing how acids and bases affect natural pigments. In bilingual workshops, students explored how the brain processes gestures, learns words, and deals with reading difficulties. The “Water in All Its States” workshop introduced them to water purification using charcoal and other natural filters.

Engineering and physics took shape through the construction of paper and wood bridges, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s self-supporting bridge. Other workshops focused on density and miscibility, as students created layered liquid rainbows and lava lamps by observing how bubbles behave in immiscible fluids. Younger pupils explored the physical properties of various materials through hands-on challenges, discovering the logic and uses of each substance.

Science Week was a fantastic way to close the school year — a celebration of knowledge, collaboration, and science as a tool for understanding and creativity.

Congratulations to all the students for their energy and commitment, and to the entire teaching team for their dedication, support, and creativity!
