New experiences to help you grow

Reinforce autonomy and independent critical thinking.

Time management and independent study habits have been established over the years to prepare students to become well-rounded individuals and thinkers, capable of adapting to society. It’s also the time to start determining future directions and to experience the preparation of a real exam. It’s all these elements that make middle school both exciting and demanding for our students.

Organization from 6th to 3rd grade

The collège marks students’ entry into secondary education. Teaching is provided by teachers who are specialists in their subject and trained in France. Ranging from 6ème to 3ème, collège covers cycles 3 and 4 of learning, where students engage in in-depth exploration of their acquired skills. Creativity is stimulated by the production of personal work.

Teachers collaborate across classes and subjects to coordinate their lessons in innovative ways, encouraging students to cultivate creative problem-solving techniques and independent or group thinking in group work, while accompanying them through the challenges of adolescence and the transition to high school.

Teaching is organized by subject: French, English, German, Mathematics, History and Geography, Civics, Science, Art and Music, Physical Education and a new modern language (Spanish) or another option, Latin.

The end of middle school is marked by the first exam(Diplôme National du Brevet) and the first decisions about career choices.

All middle school students have at least 26 hours of compulsory lessons per week, to which optional lessons can be added.

The Common Base of Knowledge, Skills and Culture

The “socle commun de connaissances et de compétences” (common base of knowledge and skills) covers everything a student needs to know and master by the end of secondary school. Mastery of the Base is a prerequisite for the Diplôme National du Brevet (DNB).

The curriculum - Five areas of learning

Languages for thinking and communicating
Methods and tools for learning
Training the individual and the citizen
Natural and technical systems
Representations of the world and human activity

Multilingualism

Learning a foreign language means developing an inquisitive mind and a deep respect for the nationalities and cultures of others.

Proficiency in French, English and one or more other modern languages is a key factor in the success of future global citizens. The multicultural environment in which our students live and work encourages language learning.

In addition, Latin is taught from 5th grade and Spanish from 4th grade.

The French language

French occupies a predominant place, as the medium of instruction in many disciplines other than linguistics, and as such, it is the language of the many exams for which our students are preparing.

English

In the form of a modern language course: students are divided into two groups according to their ability. In addition, students with a good command of English are included in the English + Collège group, which is reinforced by the teaching of European languages and cultures (ELCE). This group aims to prepare students to enter the European English section in seconde.

In addition, Latin is taught from 5th grade and Spanish from 4th grade.

German

On entry to collège, in order to offer truly personalized teaching, students are divided into 3 skill groups. Of these 3 groups, the Deutsch+ Collège group follows the German curriculum and works with the same tools and materials as a German Gymnasium.

Groups remain flexible, and students can change groups at the suggestion of the teaching staff, to enable them to progress at their own pace.

This group aims to prepare students to enter the French-German bi-national section (AbiBac) in seconde. The aim is to enhance students’ skills and knowledge of the language and culture of the partner country. Training in the bi-national section leads to the simultaneous award of the baccalauréat général and the Abitur, its German equivalent.

American International Section - SIA

The American International Section is a linguistic and bicultural program set up by the French Ministry of Education in cooperation with the United States. Its distinctive feature is that it integrates into the French system not only instruction in the language, but also in American culture.

The training provided in the international section aims to facilitate the integration and reception of foreign pupils into the French education system, and to train pupils from the French education system to practice English in depth, in particular through the use of the language in history-geography.

The American International Section (SIA) is aimed at students who are native speakers of the language of the section, or who have spent part of their schooling in a country where English is spoken, or who can demonstrate a sufficient level of proficiency in this language.

Better control for better integration

For students with little or no command of French, we offer a program of reinforced learning in French called FLSco (Français Langue de Scolarisation). This French-language support structure responds to a concern of our teaching teams and aims to facilitate the integration of all students into our system.

Sports

Physical education and sports provide access to a wide range of practices that are important for the development of an individual’s personal and social life. It encourages teenagers to seek well-being and take care of their health. It ensures the inclusion in the classroom of students with special educational needs, those with disabilities or allophones.

A coherent, diversified and balanced training program is offered to students, ensuring that they have sufficient learning time to acquire the skills set out in the curriculum.

Project-based teaching

Our students develop and enrich their experiences by choosing from a wide range of cultural and discovery activities in French, German and English. Taking part in sports, cultural and artistic activities makes a major contribution to students’ well-being at school. Arts and culture are key to developing their creativity and sharpening their critical eye.

Our school takes an active part in various international projects run by the AEFE, such as Ambassadrices et Ambassadeurs en herbe (AEH), where students put their multilingualism, oral expression and argumentation skills to good use. Our students can become real “JRIs”, young international reporters, taking part in scientific Olympiads (including “Alkindi”, a cryptanalysis competition), the International Youth Games (JIJ)…

The clubs

The quest for excellence is the driving force behind our academic program, which aims to shape our students’ critical thinking skills and make them independent, attentive and open to others in a complex, competitive world.

Outside the classroom, students can choose to develop their acting talents in the theater workshop, discover China through its language and culture in the “Everyday China” workshop, or learn about mathematical research in the “Math in Jeans” workshop, where they work in small groups, in good spirits, on complex and rich mathematical situations prepared by two research assistants from the mathematics faculty of the University of Duisburg – Essen.

MATH. EN. JEANS

A research workshop for volunteer students from the sixth to the twelfth grades, led by mathematics teachers Mr Morales and Mr Bourgeois. Ms Scheibke and Ms Kaiser, two research assistants from the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Duisburg – Essen, came to LfiSV in October to present students with topics for discussion in a playful format. Students formed groups and chose a topic. Their job is to seek out ideas and put them together to find solutions to the questions posed. They are guided by their teachers, as well as by the researchers, who come back to help them once or twice during the school year.
This work develops children’s independence, trains them to work in groups, and develops their creativity and appetite for mathematics. They are invited to summarize their research work in the form of a slide show, and sometimes a presentation board, to showcase their research and synthesize their findings to an audience of other students.

Everyday China

The workshop is led by mathematics teacher Yann Bourgeois. In this activity, Mr. Bourgeois aims to arouse students’ interest in China and its culture, through its geography, history, traditional festivals and popular customs.
This is of course an opportunity to practice Mandarin orally, through short dialogues taken from everyday life in China, but also to learn how to write Chinese characters. Language learning is supported by live recordings and videos.

Theater workshop

Variable, depending on student availability

M.Séguy, literature teacher, leads the LfiSV theater workshop.
This year’s project involves an adaptation of Molière’s “Malade imaginaire”, to be performed during the European PES Games organized at LfdD, from May 31 to June 4, 2022.
