An inspiring encounter with author Édouard Louis

On Thursday, November 13, the Première and Terminale SES students experienced a remarkable moment in Düsseldorf: a privileged encounter with the writer Édouard Louis, accompanied by their teacher Ms. Germa and the school librarian Ms. Guégan.
During this meeting, the students listened to the author present his latest book, L’effondrement, asked him their questions, exchanged views on his recurring themes, and even handed him a collective letter. Many also had their copies signed—an unforgettable memory.

Very quickly, something meaningful happens: the sociological concepts studied in class come to life. Hearing the author speak in person about social violence, determinism, and broken trajectories gives their learning new depth and resonance.
They were particularly moved by the writer’s sensitivity and the caring, attentive way he addressed each question. His precise and concrete examples gave new dimension to the sociological theories they study: they expand, clarify, and sometimes even shift.

Learning takes on a different dimension when it is enriched by experience and emotion. From an educational perspective, such encounters allow students to give concrete meaning to the concepts explored in class by confronting sociological theories with the lived experiences of an author who embodies them. They develop critical thinking, encourage thoughtful questioning, deepen the understanding of the writer’s role in society, and show that academic knowledge continues into real life, beyond textbooks and classroom lessons.

A heartfelt thank you to Édouard Louis for the time and attention he devoted to our students. These moments remind us how much richer learning becomes when it is nourished by encounters and emotion.
