Attention, time travel!
The three CE2 classes went back to 98 during a fascinating visit to the Xanten archaeological park.
The program included a visit to the museum, the beautiful spaces laid out around the remains of the Roman colony, and three workshops for our students: making a Roman wax coin, making a wax tablet to write like the Romans, and finally a disguise workshop: all the paraphernalia to dress up as a Roman legionary!
There was even a centurion in the troupe!
The students also visited the amphitheatre.
The luckiest among them even climbed the bleachers!
They took a close look at the lives of the gladiators, and even heard, in the dark corridors of the amphitheater, the furious growls of a bear ready to unleash the underworld in the arena…
Pupils were also shown how the Roman colony functioned, the layout of the town, the aqueducts that brought in spring water, and even the port on the Rhine, where boats unloaded goods straight from Rome: dates, olive oil….
Did you know that the Roman garrison was also homesick, and that the Rhine bed has moved several kilometers in 2000 years?
